چکیده

We investigate the galaxy populations in seven X-ray selected, intermediateredshift groups (0.2 < z < 0.6). Overall, the galaxy populations in these systems are similar to those in clusters at the same redshift; they have large fractions of early-type galaxies (fe ∼ 70%) and small fractions of galaxies with significant star formation (f[OII] ∼ 30%). We do not observe a strong evolution in the galaxy populations from those seen in X-ray luminous groups at low-redshift. Both fe and f[OII] are correlated with radius but do not reach the field value out to ∼ r500. However, we find significant variation in the galaxy populations between groups with some groups having field-like populations. Comparisons between the morphological and spectral properties of group galaxies reveal both gas-poor mergers and a population of passive spirals. Unlike low-redshift, X-ray emitting groups, in some of these groups the brightest galaxy does not lie at the center of the X-ray emission, and in several of the groups that do have a central BGG, the BGG has multiple components. These groups appear to represent a range of evolutionary stages in the formation of the BGG. Some groups have relatively large central galaxy densities, and one group contains a string of seven bright galaxies within a radius of 200 kpc that have a lower velocity dispersion than the rest of the system. None of the central galaxies, including those with multiple components, have significant [OII] emission. These observations support a scenario in which BGGs are formed relatively late through gas-poor mergers. Subject headings: galaxies: clusters: general — X-rays: galaxies:clusters

Luminous Phenomena of Earthquakes: Observations and Theories

Over the past few years, different theories (piezoelectric, positive holes, friction-vaporization, exo-electron emission, tribo- or fracture electrification) have been presented for the interpretation of earthquake lights. Although these theories can interpret earthquake luminous, each suffer from particular problems. There are also ambiguities and questions about the location of the light, the...

Isolation, identification and characterization of new luminous bacteria from Chah Bahar Port, southern marine habitat of Iran

Coastal region of Chah Bahar port, Sea of Oman, was screened for the presence of bioluminescence bacteria for the first time. Water samples were taken from surface and subsurface layers and immediately spread on nutrient seawater complete (SWC) agar. Luminous colonies were observed after an overnight incubation at 25°C. Among twenty luminous isolates, four of them were selected for preliminary ...

Detection of Weak Lensing in the Fields of Luminous Radiosources

We present a first attempt to reveal the possible existence of large foreground mass condensations directly responsible for the gravitational magnification of four distant luminous radiosources and one optical QSO. The technique uses a weak lensing analysis of the distant galaxies in the field of each source. We find a coherent shear 2 map with a large magnification bias on the line of sight to...

Dominant galaxies in 2dF groups

We investigate whether the spectral-type of a locally dominant (most luminous) galaxy can be used to select sets of galaxies that are physically associated (groups). We assume that passive dominants trace a group-like potential, and SF-dominants a field-like environment. The group sample includes 988 groups selected in the 2dFGRS applying a maximum magnitude difference criterion. We find that t...

Early versus late type galaxies in compact groups

We nd a strong correlation between the eeective radius of the largest early-type galaxies in compact groups of galaxies and the velocity dispersion of the groups. The lack of a similar correlation for late type galaxies is supportive of the so called second generation merging scenario which predicts that ellipticals should dominate the internal dynamics of the groups, while late-type galaxies a...
